SUS304 vs. SUS316L vs. Inconel: How to Choose Bellows Materials for High-Pressure & Corrosive Pipelines

In industrial piping design, selecting the correct alloy for metallic bellows is a critical engineering decision. Bellows elements operate as dynamic pressure vessels, subjected to continuous mechanical cycling, pressure thrusts, thermal expansion, and aggressive chemical media.

A wrong material selection will lead to premature fatigue cracking, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or catastrophic pressure boundary failure.

As outlined in our comprehensive guide,The Ultimate Selection Guide for Metallic Bellows & Pipe Expansion Joints, matching the material grade to working temperature, fluid chemistry, and dynamic stress profiles is essential for long-term system integrity.

Key Failure Modes Related to Material Selection

Before evaluating specific alloys, engineers must account for the primary metallurgical risks in metallic expansion joints:

  • Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): Common in austenitic stainless steels exposed to aqueous environments containing chlorides under tensile stress.

  • Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: Severe localized corrosion caused by static media containing aggressive halogens.

  • Corrosion Fatigue: Combined action of continuous cyclic displacement (vibration or thermal movement) and a corrosive working medium.

  • High-Temperature Oxidation: Thermal degradation and loss of tensile strength at elevated operating temperatures.

Material Performance Comparison

1. SUS304 (AISI 304 / 1.4301 Stainless Steel)

  • Characteristics: Standard austenitic stainless steel providing excellent formability and good mechanical strength.

  • Temperature Range: -196°C to +427°C.

  • Best Applications: Clean water lines, HVAC loops, low-pressure steam, non-corrosive gases, and general auxiliary service piping.

  • Engineering Limitation: Highly susceptible to chloride-induced Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) at temperatures above 60°C. Not recommended for seawater, raw river water with high chloride content, or aggressive chemical processing.

2. SUS316L (AISI 316L / 1.4404 Low-Carbon Stainless Steel)

  • Characteristics: Molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content (<0.03%). The addition of Molybdenum (2.0%–2.5%) significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

  • Temperature Range: -196°C to +450°C.

  • Best Applications: Hydroelectric penstock piping, municipal water treatment, chemical processing lines, marine cooling water, and high-pressure raw water systems.

  • Engineering Advantage: SUS316L is the industry standard baseline for Hydropower Expansion Joints. Its low carbon content prevents intergranular carbide precipitation during bellows forming and welding operations.

3. Inconel 625 (UNS N06625 / Nickel-Chromium Alloy)

  • Characteristics: High-nickel matrix alloy strengthened by molybdenum and niobium. Exhibits exceptional high-yield strength, creep resistance, and near-immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

  • Temperature Range: Cryogenic up to +982°C.

  • Best Applications: High-temperature turbine exhaust lines, geothermal steam piping, offshore oil & gas platforms, severe chemical processing, and critical high-pressure surge lines.

  • Engineering Advantage: Ideal for multi-ply bellows configurations subjected to extreme pressure fluctuations, high thermal transients, and harsh chemical exposure where standard austenitic steels fail.

Multi-Ply Bellows Design: Combining Strength and Flexibility

When operating under both high-pressure and high-frequency movement conditions, material grade alone is not enough.

Utilizing a Multi-Ply (Laminated) Bellows structure allows engineers to optimize material usage:

  • Outer Plies: Fabricated from SUS316L or carbon steel to resist external atmospheric exposure.

  • Inner Plies (Wetted Surface): Fabricated from high-grade alloys (e.g., Inconel 625 or Hastelloy) to handle the aggressive internal medium.

This multi-ply configuration reduces individual ply thickness, lowering spring rate and bending stresses while maintaining the required pressure rating.
