A thrust-free rotary compensator that uses paired rotary barrels and L-shaped force arms to form a force couple—rotating equal and opposite forces about the Z-axis to absorb thermal expansion on both pipe legs, with no internal-pressure thrust and a service life matched to the pipeline.
Rotation That Cancels Thrust—and Absorbs Expansion on Both Sides
Conventional pipe compensators convert internal pressure into a horizontal thrust that anchors must resist. The thrust-free rotary compensator takes a different approach: it uses the geometry of rotation itself to cancel that thrust, while absorbing thermal expansion on both connected pipe legs at once.
The compensator operates through paired rotary barrels and L-shaped force arms that together form a force couple. A pair of forces—equal in magnitude and opposite in direction—rotates about the Z-axis center, and this rotation absorbs the thermal expansion generated on both pipe legs on either side of the couple.
In installation, the units are used in pairs or groups. The relative rotation between grouped compensators absorbs the pipeline's thermal displacement, reducing stress in the pipe system without transferring internal-pressure thrust to the anchors.
Thrust-Free Structure
The design produces no internal-pressure thrust. Unlike conventional compensators, the pressure load is not passed to the pipeline anchors, simplifying support design and reducing structural cost.
Large Compensation Capacity
The force-couple rotation arrangement provides a large compensation range, covering thermal displacement that would require multiple conventional joints.
Service Life Matched to the Pipeline
The compensator is designed so that its design life matches that of the pipeline itself, avoiding the situation where the compensator becomes the shortest-life component in the network.
Simple, Flexible Configuration
The structure is relatively simple, and the compensation points can be arranged in multiple configurations to suit different pipe routing requirements.
Reliable Sealing Performance
The design provides dependable sealing performance for thermal service, supporting stable operation across repeated thermal cycles.
As a new type of thrust-free pipe compensator, it has been applied in real engineering projects—including thermal pipeline design in industrial plant retrofit projects—and is widely used in urban district heating networks, where its thrust-free characteristic and flexible layout offer clear advantages. It is now in extensive service on heating pipelines.
